res-q team

I was thinking about this one comment Mshairi mentioned the other day that apparently came up during her, Sokari’s & Wesley’s? interview on BBC: “the person who (said) that blogging was un-African“.

Now I am back in Kenya since 2 days and there are? already tons of “blogging material”, stuff that needs to be written down and shared with others. For instance, just this morning I saw this old pick-up which was towed away by fundis using simple ropes. The funny thing is that? it had a “res-q team” sticker on its windscreen. We stopped by and shared a laugh with these guys.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what I like about Kenya: some ppl? are poor, others are rich, some just try to make it through the day while others are so bored that they need external entertainment. What? they all? have in common, though, is their ability to laugh – no matter how? challenging their situation is…

p.s.: blogging is all about sharing your joy with others… :-)

Gaamaaaaaan!

There are about 74 copies of this very same, small but ultimate viral/commercial for Berlitz language school on YouTube, and although some of you might already know it, I just HAVE to blog it FIY. Or, as we say in our language: Mai diaarr inglish spiiking frainds, juu will äpprischiäit zhät wii häff sucksessfullii expätriäted zhe wörst naightmäire of Göörman Inglisch* spiikers of wörld-waid fäime: Mister Lothar “Loddar” Matthäus, hu bai zhe wäii riicentli kwit his dschjob äs träiner of Atlético Paranaense in Brasilien Brasilia…

“Wot are u thinking about?”^^

AOB: visitors and viewers of the upcoming world cup should be aware that Korean car manufacturer Hyundai rented 36 busses from Mercedes (Daimler Chrysler) and donated them to His Worship His Emperor Franz Beckenbauer today for use with the world cup. That is, the busses are made by Mercedes but covered with Hyundai stickers.
Hello??! That’s like sooooo 1980s, sooo russian mafia in cheap Armani/Vercace suits, soooo…[put your analogy here]. And yes, there WILL BE ppl calling Mercedes, asking them since when they had been taken over by Hyundai. Rememeber D.T.Dobie in Nairobi who sell Nissan/Datsun along with Mercedes? Some ppl think it’s one owner…
(Or in other words: Dear Hyundai, in case you are trying to lift your overall image, please provide us customers with affordable, eco-efficient and well manufactured cars. You might NOT achieve higher sales by an image campaign only…or does it implicate that Hyundai cars, trucks and busses also come with the same electrical problems as seen on Mercedes cars in the past? ;-)

* = While you’re on that Bet&Win website, choose your language, click on “the movies” and select the one with Zbigniew Boniek on “Football Individual/Teamsport”. I know it’s cheap to make fun of others, but – frankly said: I had to switch channels while watching this commercial on tv…just toooooo embarassing to hear our German stars – who did a good job! – speaking their Gamaan Inglischiii… SAMAHANI :-)

tengeneza hii…

While surfing the net and distracting myself from work that urgently needs to be finished, I stumbled upon this useful information [via Gizmodo] [via lifehacker] on “how to get an upgrade to First Class“.

You know, a few more centimeters of leg-room are a whole world to someone who is 192 cm (6,3 ft) tall. Especially, since I realized that the assigned seats fall under the “be aware” category.

Here’s their advice:

Ask the ticket counter agent nicely.

binary worlds

“There are only 10 types of people in the world:
Those who understand binary, and those who don’t*

Fellow blogger Mzeecedric recently bought himself a new DELL notebook and if I remember well, the first thing he did after starting his new computer toy was to format the main partition in order to install his own software and preferences.

Having mentioned that, I today came across an older fellow student (born in 1962!) who desperately tried to get her CV and job application letter she’d compiled in MS Works format (*.wps) emailed to a future employer.
Now, that very same woman recently bought a brand new AMD Turion64 notebook (100 GB HDD; 512 MB RAM) with LOTS of additional accessory like this really cool hybrid (digital + analogue) tv tuner + remote control from a supermarket sale for the sum of EUR 999,- …and actually, the only thing she really knows about this machine is how to start it.
I helped her to install the OpenOffice 2.0 suite and showed her how to convert her files into PDFs as well as how to email them via her yahoo account, etc….

During all these years of free computer consultation for others, I’ve often come across typical user statements such as “Oh, maybe I should buy a new computer because the old one has (software) problems” or “Oh, I don’t understand this, it doesn’t work, but I’ve invested a lot of money in it so it should work….”. I am sure a lot of geeks out there have experienced similar stories, and one is often tempted to mention that it isn’t the computer or faulty software to blame, but instead incapable users who on one hand invest a lot of money but on the other hand expect these machines to function with the ease of a simple tv remote control.

And it is not that “we” know computers that much better – there are also a lot of software questions I am having and which I’ve often tried to ignore (like doing comparatively simple stuff in Office suites). It’s just a matter of approaching technical issues, and having an interest to spend some time in front of these machines figuring out how to solve certain problems.
We are having the year 2006 now, computers and their operating systems have come a long way, things may have improved over the years, but at the same time these machines have become more and more complex – and users have often given up trying to understand how things work. Mind you – I am talking about engineers, that is, about people who are supposed to have an analytical approach on technical issues. That above mentioned fellow student is a fully certified civil engineer who has also been working as a carpenter for more than 20 years.

the perfect case mod: computer case BBQ

The reason I am mentioning all this is because I am still flabbergasted at the fact that the industry apparently tries to make computers, cars, mobile phones, PDAs, etc. more and more complex – but at the same time often neglects the fact that users just want to use their systems without worrying about technical details. Sure, there ARE interesting developments on the market – even Windows XP isn’t that bad and simple to use. Cars (except of course for BMWs :-) have simple menu-driven user interfaces on their navi systems, and it won’t take much for future generations for getting used to such systems as they are growing up with mobile phones and other gadgets. BUT! – marketing tells us to get our hands on better & faster machines, to invest again into complex systems that take us one step further away from the initial idea of just using technology for simple needs. In other words: it sort of brakes my IT-shaped heart when I come across such lost users like this fellow student who invested a lot of money in a brand new computer whose full potential she is never going to use.
Is this the progress we’ve been working on?

kikuliciousflickr

Despite the fact that I am a lousy photographer and way too lazy to further edit my digital images on this old 19″ CRT monitor (which just comes with a horrible gamma value that can’t be adjusted no matter what I try on the Nvidia GFX settings), I just turned PRO on flickr.com.

Creative Zen Vision:M - the dongle

Aterere…The US-$ 24,95 for a 1 year pro account are a lot of money for someone who doesn’t have a regular income, on the other hand, though, I wanted to know what’s this all about and although my (public) collection on flickr only contains 116 images so far, I’ll definitely add much more content in future and – the reason – will be able to arrange / re-group the pictures into different categories. Nice :-)

Goofy

I had a good laugh today while watching Firewall, a movie starring Harrison Ford as a bank’s security chief. There’s this scene where he’s out in the desert and uses a normal laptop to traceroute the GPS signal of his dog’s collar (who’s transported in a Van).

1. So MAYBE the GSM transmitter on the collar is strong enough to brake out of that Van (remember Faraday?), but there sure aren’t any base stations tuned to that signal out in the desert….or are there?
2. he uses this laptop which seems to have a WLAN connection to the net. Yeah, fo shizzle – oh c’mon Hollywood, who believes such crap? Are there any open WLANetworks out in the desert? Ati, mobile phone networks? ROFL!

==> 4 / 10 on imdb.com from me. I am waiting for more realistic entertainment….that is, since you already try to make realistic movies filled with tech-stuff, make it more plausible. There might be viewers who are not that simple-minded…

(this gps+gsm collar sure is the hottest technology portrayed in the movie – they also use this very same technology in Kenya to traceroute elephants & co. ==> I love it when high-tech works! :-)
