Die Diktatur der Angepassten…

…so I was checking openBC, met some old friends with whom I had been doing the apprenticeship and realized that only those ones who later on went for studies of business administration at a university managed to upload their profile on openBC.

Scary, so scary…

Hakuna inginiiaaaas (engineers)?
How many more lawyers and business folks does this world need?

the Chronicoool

Speaking of Dan and his artworks that inspired me and many others out there, I just had a quick stroll through his early journals and came across this:

The (Karengata) Chronicle / Nairobi, Saturday, October 12, 1985 / Price 3/50 (!)

An article by Nick Russel from 1985 – eternalised in Dan’s sketchbook.
Nick, editor & publisher of the Karen & Langata Chronicle since 21 years, recently commented on the Nairobi lowdown story and nowadays runs an online edition of the Chronicle.

@Nick: have you ever thought about installing a free blogging software such as the WordPress release on your webspace and maybe even joining the ever-growing Kenyan blogosphere?
The basic idea behind using a blogging tool is that it a) makes it easier to publish content on the internet, b) interact with your readers and c) you won’t need any IT guru in the background to fix the layout of your pages. Sijui about your webspace deals, but WordPress (as a start) is free of charge and just requires a MySQL database in the background. An alternative solution are the free, “ready-to-run” blogging services like wordpress.com or blogger.com as used by many other bloggers throughout the world. Another advantage is that you can easily switch the website’s layout by using (style) templates (again, free) or even adjust it to look like a newspaper (instead of a diary). This, I think, is easier to maintain and better than any pure content management system (cms) that otherwise requires lots of adjustments and technicooool knowledge. Hope this helps! :-)

With stories like these, there’s no need for any further entertainment….

EDIT: what exactly do I have to do to get an “All Areas Access Pass” for JKIA?
~ organize some WorldCup tickets for a KAA chief?

What really pisses me off about these two “brothers” is that with their studid russian mafia BlingBling attitude they just add to this typical conception a lot of ppl have in Kenya that Mzungu = Pesa — something which most of you know to be untrue.
Imagine what it feels like when you’re approached on a daily basis and asked for money just becos you are white. Prejudices? Sure…

Forodha

We went to Forodha Towers today and got our Kenyan Driving Licences renewed. Charges are Kshs. 500 /= for an annual renewal and 1250 /= for a triennial.

a neat way to conceal non-working lifts, isn’t it?
Keeping in mind that we were there on Friday afternoon at 4 pm and remembering the times back in the days when such services were only offered at Nyayo House, the whole process was extremely fast and well organized.
I was told that a lot of offices are still vacant at Forodha Towers as a lot of institutions were transferred to (the overcrowded) Times Tower and are now slowly moved back to the old premises. On our way out, we came across the following view(s)

By the way…it takes more than 2 years (without KK) to get a certificate for tax exemption for an NGO (~ a charitable trust) from the Treasury. For each application!

Apparently, this is what happens when huge multimedia screens (at Westlands old-Uchumi roundabout) have a date with the rain….

Nairobi, it seems, has become the city with the most billboards, advertisments and “buy two get one free”-styled promotions. No wonder people here tend to be so capitalistic these days…
=> I’d like to blog more often from here, but internet access is such a pain although I’m privileged enough to be using the DSL connection @ AEM (thx, Harry & Lelle!) which is just great! I guess I’ll need to get my hands on my own notebook soon (where i’ll be able to install my own email client) + urgently need to rethink my blogging strategy (~offline blogeditor or blogging via email).
