10 years

The other day, while looking for a local music cd in Kenya, I was offered LOTS of video CDs. Video – as in Multimedia.

And while I remember how crazy I went in 1996 for anything multimedia and ripping boring multimedia content from CDs just because I couldn’t imagine that it was possible to watch moving pictures on a computer, the idea of watching videos has just bored me lately.
In fact, I even sold my portable video/audio player and hardly ever watch tv/videos/movies etc these days. It’s not that I don’t like it but instead time is too valuable. And I know a lot of ppl feel this way.

What I find interesting, though: real freedom (uhuru) comes with a mobile computer and time to relax, enjoy and surf or even blog. And while this is just very normal for some ppl out there, for me it’s still a maximum pleasure and I enjoy it just as much as these video cds in 1996.

Talking about 1996: it has been exactly 10 years now that I’ve switched from Atari TOS to MS-Windows. Except for the multimedia benefit, I am still lookfing for the reason why I switched back then. Note: I am at this internet café right now and out of 7 surfers, 2 are using an Apple MacBook / alternative OS.

  1. JKE u alive? Habari ya Klausuren? I just installed Drapper Drake. These Linux folks just keep disapointing me everytime. Why can’t they offer me a suitable screen resolution!? 1024px@61Hz on a 19′ CRT-Display? And its not a Notebook, just a crappy old Desktop-PC!

  2. yeah it’s funny how video, tv and a lot of these things loose their appeal. there is simply nothing new – hence waste of time. and this idealised tv world that in so many aspects is way off compared to real life. dunno. maybe its a new menatlity, a new generational phenomenon. i have observed that in a lot of other people too. more in europe than here in australia though. did “we” (sounds like the elit group of non TV watchers or something) exchange TV with webm blogs and maybe chat? a more direct communication between people. more than just taking in other ideas, but also participating? That should be worth some serious investigation. Talking about that .. as nice as it looks who really uses the video capacity of an video ipod? i would be surprised if this became as big as music. it’s good to think.

  4. Happy 10th Anniversary of ehh.. Ms- Windows ( Yeah I know this is a lame comment, didn’t know what else to say since 10 years ago ehhh KU didn’t have I-net and that was still a myth :-).

  5. Man, you hit it on the head. It’s all about TIME. When I have “down time” I too choose to do things that I want to do. Like you, that doesn’t mean watching a video or even TV (which I switched off 3 months ago). It means reading or writing, or talking through interesting things with my wife or friends.
