As part of the ppl who will acturally skip buying a phone for 'lack of flashlight' Good luck. Keep at it :)

From my experience a phone with a flashlight ALWAYS comes in handy because chances are you will need a flashlight without the benefit of prior warning.

True, why worry if you can buy a flashlight instead? Because there are phones that have such a flashlight and others who like those phones and buy or miss them just because of the extra flashlight option. That's why this mod - if turned into a commercial & local project - could imho be an interesting alternative.
Otherwise it doesn't make that much sense, especially if a dedicated flashlight is a much better solution. But ppl actually these phones with the flashlight, and mainly because of that light. So there's a point in having one.

@Thomas: cool! How would you glue the (thin) wire to that aluminium foil? Would it stick? Not too sure about the back cover touching the battery - the foil would have to be glued to both sides to avoid static tension and unwanted shortcuts.

I had in fact considered this with a chewing gum paper.

Ah. I just had an idea for another hack which involves 2 old Tusker bottle caps, and LED, a battery and a spring :-)

Oy, Mate! Hm... Schalter...
ATI?

The general direction your headed with this hack looks right. Just make it fit inside the phone, like the manufactured thing...oh and get the switch. You don't want to have the LED on in the sun.
