Just learned that Yahoo has released newest autosync software. It's developed by Nokia, but my web seasrches have failed to get any meaningful info about Nokia's involvement.

I'm not going to use the software as it merely syncs your mobi with Outlook or Palm Desktop. I want no more PIM on the desktop - it's either web or nothing. So I'm gonna try one of the online services.

i tried Zyb but couldnt get it to work on my Z6 motorola phone with Tmobile service in the US. I am suspecting tmobile does not allow for 'over the air' synching

will give mobical a shot. As for plaxo...i like it actually. Very handy, well designed and has multiple sync points, so you can consolidate all your address books from multiple email boxes... hotmail, gmail, yahoo...that is my favourite feature in addition to the fact that it backs up all your vcfs.
Neat post jke.

In its early days, Facebook invites would be automatically sent to everyone in your Facebook addressbook. Some people called it spamming, and still rag on FB to this day; FB called it a mistake or oversight. Whatever.

Plaxo made a similar "mistake" in its early days, with bulk invites going out. K1's link has Plaxo's official apology. The major criticism was that knowing that Facebook had made the same "mistake", why didn't Plaxo prevent that from happening in the first place.

Personally, I'm willing to cut all services some slack because despite online social networking having been around for (four?) years, most Internet users are still new to it (despite that news media want you to think that every kid under 19 was born with a MySpace account...).

Facebook is cool and useful, so don't shy away from it.

However...you might want to hide/make private your details (if that's possible) if you're applying for a job. In the US, there are reports that employers are looking at candidates' social network sites to get personal details about them. Nothing wrong with that, but you may not want a potential boss to know too much personal information about you. And how would you know if those details prevented you from getting a job?

All 3 services promise to "respect", (if not) "protect", our privacy. Take that as you will.

Plaxo's fubar in the past gave them a bad rap, just like Facebook was flamed, roasted, and almost crucified in its early days -- for making the exact same mistake as Facebook. Funny how the newest Facebook users don't know about the early days...

Jenny, thank you very much for the link to your site. I will start going thru it today.

A request: to segment PIM/cellphone/PDA/etc backup services information from the general services info. Useful for phone geeks like us.

Thx for the update on Plaxo - I will give it a try!
Yes, Mobical and Zyb also sync the calendar and notes - I used Mobical to restore the phone book on my phone, so syncing down to the phone works fine.
From what I see what's supposed to be possible with Plaxo, I am very much tempted to use that service. Privacy isn't an issue, is it?

Curious you mention these two services. I spent 2 weeks researching them and Plaxo, and was about to pull the trigger on Plaxo when I read...

Yahoo has pulled the former intelliSync software for PIM sync'ing and are coming out with new software. Forum conspiracy theorists say that Yahoo: gonna buy one of the online sync services, or gonna introduce their own online service.

So I'm gonna wait a little longer.

What I want to know is: have you done a sync down to your phone yet? Can they also do calendars? Notes? Any issues? Have you tried Plaxo?

Good posting!

Data backup is a must no matter how big or small your data is.

I have been reading about the online backup industry for a while now. Online backup is maturing and slowly getting the attention of the general consumer. One website worth mentioning is the backup review site:

http://www.BackupReview.info

This very informative site, not only posts up to date news and articles from the industry, but also lists about 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis and features a CEO Spotlight page, where senior management people from the industry are interviewed.
