Joe, the Nokia 6230 is in fact small enough for the pocket BUT the idea behind this was to have the phone ready for use within the car (with its internal hands-free speaker) and to have it recharged at the same time. This way it is much more convenient than pulling it out of a pocket when someone calls.

The other reason is to increase reception quality and reduce transmitting power which may result in a lower power consumption, less uh-frequency radiation and an extended battery life.

The white tape is just an interim solution + it doesn't stick on the inside (double layered) so the phone remains usable.
The idea was to have a holder for the meantime as that Suzuki doesn't have any "cave" in the dashboard for small parts like a phone.

I meanwhile found a shop @ApicCentre (Westlands, Nairobi)that sells such car kits and passive holders starting from Kshs. 200/= (~ EUR 2,35).

But if the phone is taped - how do you pick it up? Wouldnt some sort of metal wire be a better alternative?

[...] Whiteafrican today launches afrigadget.com, a community blog around jua-kali* work and african innovation. I’m exited and honored to be part of it and hope to contribute. On the other hand I feel quite far away from creative african work and get really jealous about JKE visiting NBO right now and HASH planning for July. Maybe I should plan a visit en of this year? Well, such things always depend on the job situation and whether I’ve some pesa for the flight. Hey, or maybe someone wants to offer me a job in Nairobi? [...]

Good work... a suggestion though: maybe try some hard clear plastic which encloses 2/3 of the phone instead of the white tape, and maybe some more clear plastic on the "roof" of the phone to prevent it chumbing out when you hit a pot hole.

The first thing I noticed was the white tape. Now this is what I call going back to basics (if it applies) LOL! Kweli, "Looking for a Solution, not a Problem." Nice one!
